1. Fitness Pal 


Fitness Pal is a calorie counter/food diary smartphone app. It’s available on all major devices iPhone, Android, Blackberry, and Windows. The My Fitness Pal website says that those who keep a food journal double their weight loss. Motivation is something that’s hard to come by many. And if we don’t see how many calories are in those 3 slices of pizza, we aren’t going to think twice about eating it. But being able to physically see not only how bad some of the foods we crave are, but how healthy the ones we do eat are, is really beneficial to our success. For those of you on the journey to losing weight, or even just looking to adopt healthier meal choices, Fitness Pal app is one for you.

2. Pocket yoga 


Pocket Yoga is really popular and highly-rated: in Apple’s App Store, its average rating is 4.5 stars. I’m sure Pocket Yoga has value, but I don’t know what it could be. There are so many other options for online yoga classes that are so much better. YogaVibes features a huge variety of instructors, an enormous range of classes, and a bunch of short videos on specific poses and sequences.. You feel like you’re in the class. At less than $5, it’s very cheap.

The iPhone app Cyclemeter ($4.99) tracks, maps, and records your bicycle rides, then compiles all your data into excellent graphs and other records. And despite its name, Cyclemeter doesn’t just record cycling. Other activities, from cross-country skiing to running, come preloaded so at the touch of a button, you can leverage the app for more than one sport an enormous benefit. Cyclemeter collects a wealth of data, is very accurate, contains several well thought out features, and appeals to fitness enthusiasts who participate in more than one sport. There are even more feats this app can do. Cyclists looking for a great app that captures their excitement on the road need not look further.

The RunKeeper app for Android is another popular fitness based app that is geared towards runners, walkers and hikers. Like the other top running-based Android apps, RunKeeper takes advantage of the powerful GPS features built into your Android smartphone. With route tracking, a great history feature and a few other personalization features, RunKeeper can hold its own against the pack. Run Keeper is useful, easy to use and feature rich enough to list as one of the top running apps for Android. All in all, Run Keeper is a terrific free app but the developers would really need to add some “wow” factor-features before we would pay for this app.

There are a number of apps and websites out there for tracking your fitness activities and work out routines but for many people, none come close to the Fitocracy iPhone app. Once you’re beyond those exercises your physical therapist prescribed get Fitocracy! The iPhone app is great for tracking workouts at the gym or on the go. Fitocracy does meet our requirements with flying colors and offers features that we didn’t know we want until we experience them. If you’re interested in tracking your fitness activities, and especially if some additional motivation would help you get and stay active, Fitocracy is definitely worth trying. Even if you’re not into the social aspects, this is still a great app for tracking your workouts and fitness activities. Go get started and level up!

6. Nike Training club 


Nike’s Training Center app has come out to change our shapes and looks. It has instructional videos for most of the exercises if you’re not sure what to do; reward; a way to improve overall fitness; cute names for the workouts like “Butt Buster” and “The Heartbreaker”. Finally, a word to the wise: be prepared for the jumping segments. There are quite a few in some of the workouts. If you’re a woman and you own an iPod touch, there’s no reason not to download this free and fairly cool app. About all you need is a pair of handweights and a medicine ball. If you’re a man and you don’t mind that this is the Nike Training Club for women, check it out. Even though all the instructions and videos are read by and feature women there are some guys on the app store who have left positive comments. The exercises will work for everyone.

CardioTrainer is a free fitness app that tracks a variety of exercises, has a weight loss add-on, a race add-on, a game to compete against others around the world, and it will post your exercise activities to your Facebook profile if you so desire. The default settings work just fine if you are anxious to get your run on and can’t be bothered with customizing. The settings tab is quite extensive. It includes settings for miles or kilometers, voice output, GPS sensitivity, stride length, weight, music playback, etc. The app is very customizable. The only drawback to this is that the settings tab and sub-menus can be a bit confusing. It’s accurate enough for the majority of the time and is a good way to keep track of miles logged over weeks and months of use. CardioTrainer is good for those people who are “data geeks” as well as the runner or cyclist that just wants to use the hardware that they already have instead of buying dedicated gear. CardioTrainer is an incredibly capable app and has an amazing feature set for a free app.

The MapMyRun app is one such app, and it’s great for runners who like to hit the road with a smartphone in tow for entertainment, safety, and convenience. With it and a handset, users can listen to music, call for a ride if you get lost, and keep track of miles, all without carrying three separate pieces of equipment. For those who want to add social media into their running routine, the app can post directly to Facebook and Twitter from within. Users can connect with friends through the MapMyRun website and can share as little or as much information as they would like. To take a call during a run, the app has a setting that will auto pause the workout, so data won’t be skewed if a runner needs to take a quick break. There are even contests that users can enter, and if they reach the goal before the cutoff date, they are entered to win various prizes such as an iPad or a Visa gift card. It is certainly an interesting way to motivate oneself out the door every day.

Fitness apps are often deceiving, especially in their names. Runtastic really isn’t solely for runners. Sure, it’s marketed at the hobbyist runner crowd, but you can use it to track nearly any outdoor activity, from walking to cycling to skiing. Runtastic PRO isn’t the only fitness app with a misleading name. Map My Run and its companion Map My Ride+ ($2.99) apps, as well as the Cyclemeter iPhone app ($4.99). None of these apps is specific to any one sport, and they all have free versions as well, but paying a few dollars for the “pro” or “plus” edition is worthwhile because it ensures access to all the data. Some of the freebies, on the other hand, short-change you or repeatedly push an upgrade message at you. Runtastic is a solid activity tracking app, and its iPhone app is the most complete of all the different platform versions. It’s worth spending $5 for Runtastic PRO to ensure you get auto-pause, a variety of modes to adjust your exercises to suit when you’re training versus when you’re trying to burn calories, and the ability to search out new routes uploaded by other users. Spend $4.99 on either Runtastic PRO or Cyclemeter, and you won’t be disappointed.
