It has become obvious that the popularity of Internet tools these days is measured in the number of monthly active users and Instagram is no different.

When Facebook bought the photo sharing app early last year for a whooping billion dollars which only took a few Internet moments for the critics to roll in. A bunch of Instagram users figured the by-now establishment social network would ruin the app, and some vowed to even leave and many feared this would be the service’s end. Yeah, right. This couldn’t be farther from the truth, not only did Instagram’s user growth not slow down, it has seen user numbers accelerate, at least in absolute numbers and service’s growth has not slowed down at all over the past months, but rather grew steadily.

According to the Wall Street Journal report, Instagram has now reached a massive 50 percent increase since February. “Instagram said it has more than 150 million monthly active users, a gain of about 128 million users since Facebook bought the app last year. At that pace, it swiftly is closing in on seven-year-old rival Twitter Inc., which announced it had “well over” 200 million active users in March.”

When Emily White, Instagram director of business and operations joined Instagram from parent company Facebook, her first order was to push Chief Executive and co-founder of Instagram Kevin Systrom into a room and said, ‘This is all about getting the mission on paper, and two weeks later, Systrom already boiled it down to one lofty, if perhaps hokey, phrase: “to capture and share the world’s moments.”

It was a rallying principle that Instagram could now sell to its staff, its users and, just as important, future advertisers. Though there are no adds on Instagram yet, but White said it should be ready to begin selling ads within the next year.
