Sony PS4 was designed to be a gaming console rather than a media centre. The specs are impressive with an X86 processor, AMD Radeon GPU, 500GB HDD, 8GB of RAM and DualShock 4 Wireless Controller. The PS4 seems more powerful than the Xbox One on paper, despite its apparently smaller size.

The PS3 Slim is small but mighty. Even with the debut of the PS4, this console is fitted with unrivalled processing power. It is leaner and meaner: 32% smaller, 36% lighter and consuming 34% less power than the original.

The Ouya is small and would fit easily in the palm of your hand. It’s your typical console box and raked in over $8 million on Kickstarter. The heart of the Ouya is a Tegra 3 processor, backed by 1GB RAM and 6GB of storage. It’s on the Android platform with menus that are snappy and games load in a reasonable timeframe.

8. NVIDIA Project Shield: £269.99 -shield.nvidia.com

The NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor has a 72-core GeForce GPU. This is also the first quad-core application of ARM’s most advanced CPU core, the Cortex A-15. Its 5” touchscreen is 720p, and even though everyone’s focus is on the gamepad, there is multitouch in the 294 dpi retinal screen too.

Its Alien FX LED lighting system is seamlessly integrated into the chassis and takes the design to the next level. The M17x R3 has a 17.3” display with an “edge to edge” glass covering with a 1600×900 resolution. With great performance, cool design and fantastic speakers, it is a top-level 17” gaming notebook.

10. Nintendo 3DS XL: £179.99 – nintendo.co.uk

Measuring 4.88 & 4.18” top and bottom screens with 800×240 resolutions, the Nintendo 3DS contains a twin ARM11 266 MHz processor and the PICA200 GPU from Digital Media Professionals. This is a device that’s going to grab everyone all over again but, at the same time, it’s got plenty to offer the hard-core gamer.
