So winter’s approaching and you are beginning to worry about the massive electric bills you are going to receive? Then stop worrying, because scientists at MIT have invented a new bracelet that allows us to heat out cool our bodies and not worry about the bills.

To keep the temperature of your body parts at an optimum level, you usually opt for applying a towel, either warm or cold, to obtain thermal comfort.

The same concept has been used to send tailored pulses of hot or cold waveforms to the wrist so as to maintain the temperature, and thus comfort. The bigger picture here is that when we cool ourselves instead of cooling the buildings, the energy consumed is less and leads to a greener planet.  ”Buildings right now use an incredible amount of energy just in space heating and cooling. In fact, all together this makes up 16.5 per cent of all US primary energy consumption.

We wanted to reduce that number, while maintaining individual thermal comfort,” said Sam Shames, one of the creators of Wristify Technology. The team estimates that even if their device is able to drop the temperature of a building by even just 1 degree Celsius, it could easily save 100 kilowatt-hours per month of energy!

A key discovery made in the process is that the human skin is sensitive to temperature and reducing the temperature by a small amount at one place can lead to massive changes in the total body activity. In the UK, every household spends about £610 every year in keeping them warm. This can be reduced to a great extent using such technologies.
